Think you could catch it with just one hand? Well that’s what it’s like to play Guts Frisbee, the original extreme sport for flying discs. This high-speed game of throw and catch has now been played for an amazing 50 consecutive years at the International Frisbee Tournament, being held this June 30th and July 1st in Han*****, Michigan. This IFT promises to be the biggest, most historic, most competitive Guts Frisbee tournament ever, drawing players old and new from all over the United States and Canada. And for the first time ever, two strong teams from Japan—including “Katon”, the World Flying Disc Federation World Champions—will be joining the intense competition. The sport’s official sanctioning body for North America, the United States Guts Players Association (USGPA), is also planning to induct some of history’s most outstanding players into the Guts Frisbee Hall of Fame at their Saturday night players’ banquet. New inductees George “Thor” Anderson, Bill Begoske, Dave Bradshaw, Tom Field, Bill Hodges, and Gerard Newman will join the ranks of such flying disc legends as Fred Morrison, the inventor of the original Pluto Platter, the Healy brothers who started the IFT, and “Steady Ed” Headrick, the visionary who won two IFTs and is credited with inventing the standard “pole hole” basket used on modern disc golf courses. The International Frisbee Tournament is the oldest and most prestigious flying disc tournament in the world, dating back to 1958, when some fun-loving folks at a family picnic in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula took a Pluto Platter—the direct ancestor of the modern Frisbee—and invented a simple game of throw and catch between two teams standing about 15 yards apart. They called it “Guts Frisbee” because to score a point, you had to throw the disc so hard that the opposing team couldn’t catch it cleanly in one hand—then have the guts to try catching the screaming-fast disc when it was thrown back at you. The Wham-O® company—fresh off their success with the Hula Hoop®—acquired the rights to the Pluto Platter around the same time, renamed it the Frisbee, and launched a major fad that swept the nation. As the years went by and millions of Frisbees were sold, that humble family picnic grew and grew, until tens of thousands of people were attending what had become known as the International Frisbee Tournament, or IFT. By the early 1970’s, the game of Guts had spread across the country, then around the world, with coverage on radio, television, major newspapers, and even TIME magazine. Any amazing kiteboarding journey full of adventure, kiteboarding and exlporation. After a short 40 minute plane trip from the mainland we landed on the island of Kadavu, where we then got into a fleet of long boats that took us an hour along the north coast of Kadavu across a short open ocean passge and onto our final destination of Ono island, our home for the week. We had been given our own little paradise right on the beach at Kenai Resort. We were to be living in little grass Bure, some of which had been especially built for us. The local people were so welcoming, and made the most amazing food for us throughout the whole week, catching fish everday,and making their speciality cakes and breads. The mornings greeted us with the sounds of wind in the palm trees and the tide lapping the shore, and you could see it in everyone’s faces how excited they were to be here and to be getting out on the water. Each day we got back in the long boats and headed off to the north of Ono Island to Nangara Point and the beach for our kiteboarding. We were kept busy everyday, trying to do as much as we could, with plenty of free riding, clinics, races, down winders and expression sessions. Not to mention snorkelling, rock jumping, hiking to the water falls and exploring of the island. The most amazing, first ever, women's only kiteboarding event. The Cindy Mosey Island Odyssey!!! It truly was an adventure, as we had to get on small 15 seater planes to get to Kadavu Island and then in several long boats for an hour to our final destination Ono Island. I think many of us had some expectations of what it was going to look and be like, but as we came around the final corner into the bay at Kenai Resort and saw the little beach Bures where we would be living, right on the beach! Most of Kenia resort was built especially for us to come there and the local villages welcomed us with their speciality food and the children singing for us. Welcomed to the village by the elders who were brought in by boat especially to welcome us. Living right on the ebach in our own little paradise had the advantages of waking up each morning to the sound of wind in the palm trees and the tide lapping the shore. You could see it in everyone’s faces how excited they were to be there and to be getting out on the water. Each day we got back in the long boats and headed out to the north of Ono Island to Nangara Point to the beach for our kiteboarding. The week was filled with free riding clinics for the social girls, downwinders, racing and expressions sessions. And with the wind blowing everyday we had the options some morning of taking it easy and doing yoga and hill walks before heading to the beach. As well as all the kiteboarding we did in beautiful clear blue water, we got to do plenty of snorkelling, swimming, rock jumping and hiking to the water falls.
